From http://backyardaquaponics.com/

Aquaponics by definition is the combination of aquaculture and hydroponics. The beauty of aquaponics is that in the combining of the two they equal out the negative aspects in each of them. In other words, the sum of the two when combined is greater than the sum of the two individuals.

Nutrient rich fish water is pumped from the fish tank into gravel beds, where plants growing in the gravel extract the nutrients from the water. The water then drains back into the fish tank cleaned of excess nutrients and freshly oxygenated.

Imagine a system on your back patio, enough to feed the whole family. With no chemicals and no wastes, using about one tenth of the water used in dirt grown vegetables. You might be wondering where's the catch, but there isn't one!

This is plant growth in an aquaponic system that's only 10 weeks old. According to university studies in Canada, aquaponic plant growth has been found to exceed inorganic hydroponic growth rates. And aquaponic fish have been found to have less health problems than fish grown in intensive aquaculture systems.

Backyard Aquaponics has been providing aquaponics information to the public for a number of years now. Due to increased interest we have expanded and started to supply a range of goods including pumps, tanks, growbeds, and complete systems. Please visit our products page if your interested in further information.

As aquaponics is a fairly new concept in today’s society, and information is not so easy to come by, my aim here is to provide as much information as possible, so that anyone can start experimenting with better, safer ways of feeding themselves and their families. To help people get better information, in early 2006 I started the Backyard Aquaponics discussion forum, it's now a thriving friendly community of people involved in, and building aquaponic systems. It's free to join up, and you can become part of the biggest and friendliest aquaponics group in the world.

Aquaponic systems come in all shapes and sizes, on the forum you can see different systems being built by the forum members from around the world.
